What every freelance invoice should include
Miss one of these and a payment can stall. Here's the checklist:
- Your details — name or business name, email, and address.
- Client details — who is being billed, plus a billing contact.
- Invoice number & dates — a unique number, issue date, and due date.
- Itemised work — a clear description, quantity, and rate for each task.
- Total due — subtotal, any tax, and the final amount.
- Payment terms — how and when you expect to be paid.
Invoice numbering and payment terms
Give every invoice a unique number (for example INV-0042) and keep them sequential. It makes reconciliation easier for your client and gives you a clean audit trail. Then set clear payment terms — Net 14 or Net 30 are common — and state your accepted payment methods.
Clear invoices get paid faster. Vague line items and missing terms are the two most common reasons a freelance invoice sits unpaid.
